Jake battled GSP in front of 60,000 rabid fans and also earned a blackbelt under Ceasar Gracie, despite (or because of?) never tasting meat—and that means beef, chicken, pork, fish, etc. Jake talks about being born on a commune and raised by hippy parents, one of whom, his father, was a badass green beret. Sean McCully fought Erik Paulson less than two years after UFC 1. At this time there were very few Jiu Jitsu gyms in the U.S., and even fewer (maybe none) MMA gyms. He also founded L.A. Boxing, a franchise operation later acquired by the UFC.
